Corridor X (Belgrade – Niš) Environmental and Social Impact Assessment
This project places significant emphasis on protecting the environment and human rights. Corridor X is a modern high-speed rail system connecting major cities and local communities, passing through some of Serbia’s most beautiful landscapes.
By shifting passenger and freight traffic from road to rail, it significantly reduces harmful gas emissions and improves connectivity nationwide: citizens will travel faster and more easily, goods transportation will be facilitated, and pollution will be reduced. It is also important to emphasize that, in addition to complying with Serbian laws and regulations, the project meets European environmental and social standards, specifically those of the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).
The Railway Corridor X project is founded on principles of transparency and public engagement. During the first phase, which lasted from spring 2021 to summer 2022, a comprehensive Environmental and Social Impact Disclosure Package was prepared. These documents, which testify to a commitment to European environmental and social standards, were made available and published on the EIB and EBRD websites. Corridor X was approved for financing only after the documentation disclosure period had passed, clearly highlighting the significance and importance of public opinion and involvement.
The documentation is available in both English and Serbian, and you can find it HERE.
Currently, the environmental and social Impact Assessment package for each of the Corridor X Sections is in preparation.
